IESR 120 - Geology and Use of Water Systems
February 26 – April 2, 2026 (in person, Edmonton, AB)
This online introductory 3-credit course is offered through Yellowhead Tribal College and taught by Dr. Konstantin Dlusskiy, a long-standing member of the Alberta Soil Science Workshop organizing committee. This course is part of the Indigenous Stewardship and Reclamation program but could be taken as a stand-alone course. In this course, students are introduced to the study of the Earth and issues related to earth forming processes, with an emphasis placed on the geology of western Canada. The first half of the course will deal with major elements of geology related to the Earth and rock-forming processes. The second half of the course will cover practical applications of geology, such as industrial uses (mining, oil and gas extraction), water supply from the earth (water wells), aggregate (gravel) and limestone (concrete). Other topics will include issues associated with subsurface and groundwater contamination, and mechanisms of treatment of contaminants.

June 3 to June 5, 2026
This 24-hr introductory soil science course is fully field-based.
The 3-day field school focuses on hands-on experience with application to industry standards.
Focusing on:
- Description of soil pits and landscapes
- Field diagnostics of soil properties and processes
- Soil classification to Subgroup level of the Canadian system of soil classification
- Soil sampling protocols

EXCPE 4297 - Soil Classification & Mapping
This 3-credit advanced agrology course is provided by the University of Alberta Continuing Education and includes a one-day field trip in the Edmonton area.
The 40-hour course is focused on soil processes, principles of the Canadian System of Soil Classification, soil profiles and diagnostic features, factors of soil formation and soil-forming processes, soil survey procedures, and utilization of existing spatial information to support soil mapping at a detailed scale.
EXCPE 4281 - Applied Soil Physics
This 3-credit agrology course is provided by the University of Alberta Continuing Education.
The 40-hour course is focused on water held by soil, water movement through soil and the linkage between soil water regime and processes within the hydrologic cycle, with emphasis on water infiltration and redistribution. Other topics include soil thermal and aeration properties and processes, impact of spatial variability and soil mechanics. The course explores applied soil management challenges involving the use of soil physics to address agronomic, environmental and reclamation objectives.
